Summer is here!!!!! Time
to think about sunny days and beach vacations, cool drinks and summer nights.
So to celebrate our next few months of warm weather with “Making Lemonade”. This month’s project was
made using the GO! Ohio Star-12” finished die and a layer cake (10” squares) of
“Lemony Squeezy” from Benartex.
If you are anything like
me you have a few pre-cuts lying around your studio. I am always attracted to
the rainbow of colors and the nice price point on pre-cut packs when I visit
any quilt shop. For this project I decided to use a Layer Cake that was a group
(36) of 10” squares. The project can easily be made with cut yardages as well.
Layer cakes, charm packs and other pre-cuts work wonderfully with the Accuquilt
GO! Die cutter, as you will see with this project.
The pattern for this
month’s project is free from The Whimsical Workshop. You can download the free
pattern at www.TheWhimsicalWorkshop.com along with our past free patterns. We have also included
traditional cutting instructions for this project in the pattern too.
First step is to lay out the 10”
squares and divide it up into four groups as shown in our pattern. You can
follow our color palette or come up with you own combination. Once you have the
fabrics divided up, refer to the pattern to cut the assorted triangles and
squares as listed.
I recommend pairing up the cut
triangles before sewing. I do this so that I do not end up with 3 or 4
triangles of the same fabric at the end. Once everything is paired up, it is
time to sew!
First step is to sew together four
different triangles to make one quarter square triangle. You will need four
quarter square triangles, four corner squares and one center square for each
block. For our layout we used 9 blocks. Once the blocks were made, I sewed them
together in three rows of three blocks to make the quilt top.\
Next up is the scrappy
pieced border. Lay out the eighteen 2 ½” x 10” assorted strips as desired for
color placement. Sew the strips together to create one strip set. Cut the
strips set into four 2” x 36 ½” strips for the borders. Two of these will
become the side borders. Sew one 2” square on each end of the remaining two
borders to create the top and bottom borders. Sew the borders to the quilt top
to finish.
